The world football championship starts tonight. What do ecstatic football fans need apart from the goals of their favourite team? According to our local newsletter, they require a comfortable supply of beer and barbecue sausages (in packs of 11, of course). And how do totally hyped couch footballers calm down so that they are well rested and fit for the following match (and the job) on the next day? For example with a natural tranquilizer like valerian (as tee, caspules, ets.). For cats it is just the other way round. I think you cannot enjoy your pets more. What to keep in mind though: As the little cushions, mice and toys have a very distinctive aroma (the best husband of all says stench) you should store them – once they are dry again as they get really slobbered – in airtight freezer bags. As cats get used to the smell like we humans get used to our daily dose of perfume or aftershave, you should not just leave the valerian toys out and about. And a word of warning: There are cats that show extreme reactions. So if you have more than one cat it may be a good idea to do a little test. After all we don’t want a friendly fan turn into a violent hooligan.

PS: A short follow-up on yesterday’s scratch pad issue: An attentive reader (thank you, Steed!) pointed out to me that if the cardboard really gets scratched away then there should be pieces of it lying around like confetti. How true! Vaccuuming is the price you have to pay for saving your favourite rugs!

Heute beginnt die Fußballweltmeisterschaft. Was brauchen ekstatische Fußballfans außer Toren ihrer Mannschaft? Glaubt man unserer Tageszeitung, dann ist das ein komfortabler Vorrat an Bier und Grillwürstchen (natürlich im 11er-Pack). Und wie können sich völlig aufgekratzte Couch-Fußballer dann wieder so weit beruhigen, dass sie am nächsten Tag ausgeschlafen und fit für das nächste Spiel (und den Job) sind? Beipsielsweise ganz natürlich mit Baldrian (als Tee, Dragee usw.). Bei Katzen ist es ja genau umgekehrt. Da sorgt ein Baldriankissen nicht für einen entspannten Schlummer, sondern für Verzückung. Ich glaube, ihr könnt euren Tigern keine größere Freude machen. Was man beachten sollte: Da die Kissen, Mäuse und Säckchen ein extremes Aroma (der beste Ehemann von allen sagt Gestank) verbreiten, sollte man sie, wenn sie wieder trocken sind (sie werden angenuckelt und ordentlich vollgesabbert) in luftdicht verschließbaren Gefrierbeuteln aufbewahren. Denn für immer liegen lassen, ist keine gute Idee. Da geht es Katzen wie uns Menschen mit Parfum: Hat man den Duft zu lange in der Nase, riecht man ihn nicht mehr. Manche Katzen können auch völlig überdreht reagieren. In Mehrkatzenhaushalten bitte also vorher ausprobieren, ob alle den Duft gleichermaßen gut vertragen, sonst werden aus braven Fans schnell gewaltbereite Hooligans.

PS: Eine Nachlese zu gestern: Ein aufmerksamer Leser (danke dir, Steed!) machte mich darauf aufmerksamn, dass wenn die Wellpappe weggekratzt wird, überall kleine Schnipsel herumliegen sollten. Recht hat der Mann! Staubsaugen ist der Preis, den man für die Schonung seines Lieblingsteppichs bezahlen muss.
