Today’s issue/riddle is about intelligence. As we have already established the cat’s intelligence in various previous issues, this one is about birds. Normally, birds cannot see window panes. That is why every year billions of birds perish not only at big glasfronted high-rises but also at clear objects so small as a car window. While sticking on silhouettes of birds of prey does not help, not cleaning the windows absolutely does (finally THE excuse!) as does special glas but the best – and probably cheapest – solution would be just to close the curtains, blinds, etc. But every once in a while, there is a bird that totally grasps the principle. When we bought the house a couple of years ago, there was a wagtail that deliberately took advantage of the big living room window. This year a male blackbird „uses“ it.

Question: How does the blackbird make use of the window?

a) It admires its own reflection.

b) It things the reflection is another bird and it attacks it.

c) It things the reflection is another bird and it courts it.

d) It picks up the flys and horseflys that have flown against the glas and are lying stunned or dead on the window sill.

Beim heutigen Rätsel geht es um Intelligenz. Da wir die Intelligenz der Katze ja bereits in zahlreichen Beiträgen zweifelsfrei belegen konnten, geht es heute um Vögel. Normalerweise können Vögel Fensterscheiben nicht erkennen. Darum sterben jedes Jahr Milliarden von Vögeln nicht nur an den Glasfronten von Hochhäusern, sondern bereits an so kleinen durchsichtigen Objekten wie Autofenstern. Während das Anbringen von Raubvogelsilhouetten nicht wirklich etwas bringt, hilft das Nicht-Putzen der Scheiben (endlich, DIE Ausrede!) auf jeden Fall, genaus wie speziell behandeltes Glas, aber am besten – und wahrscheinlich auch preiswertesten – schließt man einfach die Vorhänge, Jalousien etc. Aber gelegentlich gibt es einen Vogel, der das Prinzip völlig versteht. Als wir vor Jahren das Haus kauften, gab es eine Bachstelze, die die Vorteile des großen Wohnzimmerfensters für sich zu nutzen wusste. Dieses Jahr ist es eine männliche Amsel.
